53: This building, 97 Orchard St., housed a German saloon from 1864 through the 1880's. It housed Max's auction house in the 1930's and it stood condemned and vacant from the 1930's until it became part of the Tenement Museum.

55: This 1866 map of Prussia and German, commissioned by the federal court in New York, shows Schleswig and Holstein as part of Germany -- reflecting the German, rather than the Danish, view of their nationality.
