Vision:
I envision a much more visible Humane Society in Tuscarawas County that utilizes the wealth of untapped potential in our community. I envision a new improved animal shelter that people will not be afraid to visit, where the rate of euthanasia falls drastically, has onsite spay/neuter capabilities, and can house more animals until adoption occurs. I would like to see improved animal behavior assessments for better adoption matching. I have experience in grant writing, fundraising, and finance that would be valuable in the development of a new animal shelter as well as ongoing shelter operations. If elected to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society Board of Directors, I will be dedicated to the improved welfare and protection of animals in our community.

EDUCATION: Associates Degree in Business from Stark State College of Technology for Administrative Information Technology.
EXPERIENCE: Secretary for Day Treatment at The Child and Adolescent Service Center (mental health center in Stark County for children and their families). In addition to my administrative duties, I brought to work with me Holly, the on site therapy dog for the agency. On my own time I solicited donations from organizations to replace our dishwasher as well as acquiring Cleveland Indians tickets to a game for 25 clients and therapists (2 different seasons) including hot dog and beverage coupons. As a team Holly and I greeted the students, visited in the classrooms, and we did interventions when clients were unresponsive or out of control. I now have 3 dogs that are Delta certified through Mercy Medical Center in Canton, OH.; Cody, Clifford, and Holly. I have been a volunteer there for almost 4 years. I also train our dogs for Ralley Obedience trials. I have taken donations to the Tuscarawas Dog Pound. I have volunteered cleaning areas in the stalls where dogs were kept at the Tuscarawas County Fair Grounds feed and watering the dogs and took one to the vet.
VISION: It is my vision that the Tuscarawas Humane Society will grow and flourish. I would like to see a program implemented into the elementary and middle schools in our county to help raise humane children through interactions with animals. This would promote reflex-like compassion in our children towards animals and to raise society’s awareness of how we treat one another. The children are the future ambassadors for all life on Earth. We need to continue work with the spay and neuter program. I would like to see fundraisers set into place to help off set costs. I would be most happy to serve on your Tuscarawas County Humane Society Board.
FAMILY: My husband, Dan Hershberger and I live in Tuscarawas County with our four dogs: Brownie 17 yr., our first therapy dog who went for many years to New Dawn Retirement Community daily; Holly 4 ½ yr. who was the on site therapy dog at The Child and Adolescent Service center for 2 ½ yr. and has visited at Mercy Medical Center for 3 yr,; Cody and Clifford 2 yr. who have been visiting at Mercy Medical Center for ½ yr. (Holly, Cody, and Clifford are Delta Certified). I have 2 daughters Chrissy 28 and Jeannie 22.

Our Life & Vision
After retiring from government my wife and I decided to move to Tuscarawas County (probably the best decision we've ever made). We run a full service Alpaca Farm and we're responsible for the Seven Pines Horse Rescue Foundation. a 501c3 org. that identifies and rescues ill treated horses or horses that have lost their home. We also run an adoption service where we give the horses to suitable families at no cost. We do the Alpacas for fun and profit and the Foundation as a way to give back to GOD.
Simply put, my vision is to become part of a team in Tuscarawas County that seeks to continue to improve the THS so that it becomes one of the best in America. Never before in this country and County has the issue of the ethical treatment of animals been more paramount. I believe my expertise could benefit the organization and it would be a way for our family to continue giving back as a way of saying thank you for themany blessings we have received.
Thank you for your consideration.

I reside in Dover with my wife April and daughter Alaina (Allie), our two rescue dogs Pogo and Norman round out the family. I am currently a supervisor at the accounting firm, Hall, Kistler and Company LLP in Canton, Ohio. I’ve worked in public accounting for nearly ten years and have extensive experience with Audits, Reviews and Compilations of both for-profit and non-profit entities (and the related tax work). In addition I sit on the board and am the chairman of the economic restructuring committee for Main Street New Philadelphia. I feel my accounting experience would greatly benefit the Tuscarawas County Humane society as they set goals for the future. I would like to see the Humane Society build its membership, refocus on fundraisers (instead of relying on solely bequests, interest and dividends), and Re-evaluate the investment goals of the organization to maximize our assets (the Humane society has an average return of just 3.86% in the past four years). I also feel the society should set well defined short term and long term goals and work AS A GROUP to meet said goals. I believe that with the efforts of our membership and the generosity of past and future donors this chapter of the Humane Society can be the standard which others are judged.

Past Board member of the Kennel Club
3 year Board member of the East Central Ohio Builders Association.
Vision:
My thoughts are If you think you can you can, If you think you can't you can't.
I think we can open a shelter in this county in the future. I have people approach
me often and say if there was a shelter they would gladly volunteer to help.
I think with everyones cooperation we could achieve this goal.
My idea for our Kennel Club was a dog park. In 3 yrs as president of the Kennel Club,
a lot of hard work and dedication we now have a dog park in progress with an off leash area in place.
It can be done.

I am currently the Tuscarawas County dog warden - a position I have held since 1992.
I started working as a humane society volunteer in 1986. The conditions at the dog pound were horrifying. I was determined to make things better. With the help of many caring, supportive people (especially Rachel Silverstone) we have accomplished much thru the years to raise the standards of care for all of our canine friends including:
1. Establishing a donation fund for medical care
2. Providing comfort for the dogs by means of blankets to sleep on and toys to play with (they slept on cement)
3. Holding adoptable dogs as long as possible past the 3 days required by law
4. Being instrumental in having the gas chamber dismantled and performing euthanasia by injection...a much less traumatic way for an animal to be put down
I am strongly committed to the cause of animal welfare as I have dedicated my life to it and will continue to do so as long as I am able.
For the last several years I have been the vice-president of the local humane society. I am very proud to be part of an organization where animals are given the respect they deserve. Working directly with people and dogs in all kinds of situations, I have developed a good working relationship with law enforcement and our local veterinarians. My experience has been hands-on.
I have taken home several "pound puppies" over the years. Some were older, some had special needs. All were loved and cared for until they crossed the rainbow bridge. My fur kids are my family. I can't imagine my life without them.
Please take the time to consider me for a position on the board of directors for the Tuscarawas County humane society. I would be honored. Thank you.

I have been involved with helping animals for as long as I can remember, although I initially became involved with the Tuscarawas County Humane Society in 1982. I began by volunteering at the Tuscarawas County Dog Pound. Back then the pound workers were not paid to care for the dogs on weekends/holidays and the dogs had to go from Friday to Monday without care. I would feed/water the dogs and clean the kennels on those days. I did this volunteer work for ten years. I also did the Hot Dog in the Times Reporter for eight of those years. I became involved with all the facets of the society including fund-raisers such as; bake sales, pictures with Santa, yard sales, pet shows, pet visits to area nursing homes, and bingo. I also addressed different youth groups on the history, purpose, and needs of the humane society.
I would often assist the humane officers by checking on neglect and abuse cases including seizures of animals, many of which I fostered at my home until the cases were settled. For three years I also served as President of the Tuscarawas County Humane Society (1989 to 1992).
For many years, I have worked under Ohio-Licensed wildlife rehabilitators. This involved rescuing injured or orphaned wildlife and caring for them until they were able to be released back into the wild.
My animal family includes 2 dogs (Sadie & Gucci), 2 cats (Larry & Gink), and three very vocal Damascus donkeys. Over the years I have had many more that have come to me from the dog pound, unsatisfactory environments, or were abandoned. My home has been sanctuary to dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, chickens, wild critters, and many others. I have loved and cared for them all.
I will do my utmost to use my 25+ years of experience and dedicated love of animals to uphold the goals of our society and further our vision of a more compassionate community.
Please consider me for the Tuscarawas County Humane Society Board of Directors. I would be honored to serve.
Thank-you!

My wife Susan and I reside in Dover and are happy to have raised four children to adulthood. On our farm we have four horses, four dogs (one of which we rescued and nursed back to health after his previous owner allowed him to suffer from severe frostbite), several cats and a bird. I have a life-long interest in the welfare of animals that began when I was entrusted, at a young age, to assist with the care of my family’s horses, dogs and cats.
I am President of Miller Studio, Inc. where I oversee our Magic-Mounts and Beech Engineering divisions and I also sit on the Board of Directors. I have owned and operated Fieldview Wood Products for over 20 years. I also purchase and restore historic homes in Dover. I am the former President of Junior Achievement in Tuscarawas County and former President of Dover Community Development Assoiation.
I would like to be considered for a seat on the Tuscarawas County Humane Society’s Board. There is a need for the community to have more awareness that the Humane Society exists. Certainly membership will increase with added awareness. The issue of whether or not to build an animal shelter is contentious but need not be divisive. More research is needed and I feel my background in business will be an asset in this and other decisions that will need to be made.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Personal information:
Dick Marshall became my husband in 1965. We were born and raised in Dover, but shortly after marriage moved to Sugarcreek to live the country life. In 1977, we became parents of Susie, who married Marlin Schlabach in 2000 and now Dick and I are grandparents of Morgan – 2 yrs. old.
On the Marshall farm you will find seven horses, a donkey, chickens, goats, dogs and cats. The majority of these animals have been rescued. The barn doors and gates are always open for “needy” animals.
Education
Graduated from Dover - two years of college
Experience
After ten years of office work at Joy Mfg. in New Philadelphia, I stayed home to help raise chickens and Susie. After Sue had a few years in school, I became a school bus driver and an on bus instructor for Garaway Local Schools until 1999. In 1989 I became a part of the Ohio Central Railroad in Sugarcreek and served as the passenger representative for the railroad for over ten years. I remain a part of the railroad.
1998 began to volunteer for Cats N Us and for the past four years have served as director of that organization. My duties have been many and varied. Upon becoming director, there were several serious goals that were set for the shelter and many major improvements have been made at the shelter since then. I work with a core of dependable volunteers.
Five years ago I became active in the Humane Society. Have worked with and assisted the Humane Officers and have been a “gofer” for the society. Along with other shelter volunteers, I have assisted in rescuing and finding housing for multiple rescued animals.
From my childhood days on the farm, I have been passionate in caring for animals. They have always been a part of my life. Animals are a part of God’s creation and I feel we are responsible for the care and protection of this part of His creation.
Goals for the Humane Society:
Enhance the spay/neuter program
Make the HS “full service”
Community/public awareness
Develop an adult/child education program in animal protection, care and welfare on the connection of animal abuse and child abuse
Expand and develop a more active membership.
Stronger laws need to be made for the welfare and protection of all animals in the state of Ohio. At present, animals have few rights.
Space is greatly needed to accommodate rescued animals
Acquire money /funds
Experience is a great teacher and has been for me. I have assisted many local residents with animal problems and in finding lost pets, rescuing cats from trees, trapping feral cats, spaying and neutering cats and dogs, spaying/neutering and returning . We’ve acquired funds to make it possible for people who are on a fixed income to be able to keep and care for their pets. Along with the Humane Society, we have implemented a spay/neuter program. It has been very effective. In the past ten years, I have visited many animal shelters in various states and have seen what a strong Humane Society can do.
My record shows that anytime, day or night and in any kind of weather, I am ready and willing to assist in rescuing or caring for animals. I get the job done.
With my experience with people and animals and my past record, I feel I am qualified to serve on the Board of Directors and continue to work diligently to do what it takes to establish one of the greatest Humane Societies in the state of Ohio.

I have one child, Matthew Lautzenheiser, my Son is the Director of the Dover Historical Society. I am also the very PROUD Grandmother of two Grandson’s, Douglas age 4 and Benjamin age 2. My Sister, Brother In Law and Mother still reside in New Philadelphia, OH.
I am a longtime member of HSUS, the Humane Society of the United States and also an active member of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Our family consists of three Boxers, two of which are rescue dogs. We also own a Lab mixed which is also a rescue boy. He was scheduled to be euthanized after birth due to an irresponsible breeder. However, he now has found his fur-ever home, as a member of our family. Eight cats (most of which are rescue cats) are also members of our family. We also have a Moluccan Cockatoo that is 12 years old.

I was a volunteer in Ohio for NEOWR (North East Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitation) from 1994, working as a sub-permitee under Ann Swain of Bolivar, OH., until I obtained my own permit in 2003 thru the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Our purpose was to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned and injured wild animals and place them back into the wild where they belong.

I currently am a volunteer for FLBR (Florida Boxer Rescue). Florida Boxer Rescue is a well established and highly recognized all volunteer organization in the State of Florida. FLBR is a non-profit organization.
Education
I am a 1973 graduate of Dover High School.
My Vision for the Tuscarawas Co. Humane Society
To maintain the current spay and neuter program that is already in force. This current program has made a HUGE difference in Tuscarawas County. To assist those pet owners who need financial assistance with veterinarian expenses. I would like to see our Tuscarawas County Humane Society grow in membership, we need to get more of the community informed and involved ! In the future a shelter may be a possibility. However, without increased membership and proper funding, it could be a downfall. We need to look into the reality of a shelter, the expense, maintance, insurance and veterinarian costs. All of this plays a role in the reality of a Humane Society shelter. I only hope for the best for our Humane Society and the ever growing problem of abused, neglected and over populated animals.
I will do my very best to make the proper decisions for the benefit of the Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
If elected to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society Board of Directors, I will be in constant contact via cell phone, emails and fax. I will be returning to Tuscarawas County on a routine basis due to my family and will be able to attend meetings periodically throughout the year.
Thank you for considering me for this position. I feel I would be an asset to the Board of Directors as I am very open minded, mature and have worked in the world of animals for over 25+ years.

I have lived in the area since birth and have been an active part of our community. I am married to Don Quicksall and we have three grown children Jason, Tracy, and Nathan. Our fun loving pets include one dog named Didja, one cat named Harlee, and two water turtles.
I began community service at a very young age with the Red Cross as swim-aid volunteer and at the age of 15 serving as a candy striper for Union Hospital for four years. Since that time, the gratification of helping others has spurred me to many other charities, organizations, and committees on which I have had a variety of duties. While employed at Harbor House, the local domestic violence shelter, as the Volunteer Coordinator, I was instrumental in forming the Ladies Auxiliary Helping Hands for Harbor House. I also served as the Vice President of the Auxiliary. I served three 2 year consecutive terms on the board of directors of Harbor House and also as Vice President of the board. Having also served two 2-year consecutive terms on the board of directors of United Health Foundation, now known as First Call For Help. I was also Co-Chairperson for the Harbor House Golf Outing 2001-2005 (raising $13,000.00-$16,000.00 per golf outing) and was intricately involved with the Helping Hands for Harbor House style show 2002-2005. I'm also a member of the Tuscarawas Kent State Veterinary Technology Advisory Board.
Dogs are not our whole life but they make our lives whole. I consider this to be true for all animals and that is why I am pursing a position on the board of the Tuscarawas County Humane Society. My objective is to better serve the welfare of all animals both domestic and wild. I have had an in ordinate amount of compassion for all animals and am completely disheartened by any form of abuse or neglect. The majority of my pets throughout my life have been strays or rescued from shelters and it is always painful for me to leave any behind. But, it is more than that, I believe that I would bring a great deal of positive energy that would help to motivate others. I have a lot of ideas that I would like to implement such as a membership drive that would bring new faces and new ideas to the table. I would also like to see an educational program developed so that volunteers could go into the schools, organizations, and reach out to other foundations within the community. I believe that we would be overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Tuscarawas County if there were a greater awareness of the Humane Society and its functions. In addition, I feel that it is crucial to the welfare of animals that we promote working with state legislators to improve Ohio's laws against animal abuse.
It is important for people to see the progress of an organization and to have enough faith in it to become active. I would love the opportunity to be part of making that happen.

Hello,
My name is Cindy Silverthorn and I am "in the running" to be seated on the board of directors for the Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
I have been a member of the humane society for nearly 20 years. My personal information is as follows: I am a divorced mother of a 27 year old son named Drew. I graduated from New Phila high school in 1976 and from Kent State - Tusc. Branch in 1996. I received an associate degree in arts and sciences with most of my classes in the field of criminal justice. I worked my way through college while caring for my son and received my degree with honors.
I chose to forego any type of job dealing with humans. Humans determine their own fates and there are many agencies that assist people with their troubles. Instead, I work at the dog pound caring for the unwanted and helpless dogs that sadly enough, oftentimes temporarily, stay at the facility. I am certified by the state to do euthanasia by injection using the applicable drugs made for this use. Unfortunately, this is the only solution we have to deal with the overpopulation of companion animals. Before I go any further, let me say I love animals and I live my love of them everyday by caring for their needs and giving them all the affection I have to give.
The idea of euthanizing homeless pets to cut down on this huge overpopulation is as horrifying to me as it is to any other person who loves animals, however this is reality only because people continue to breed more and more dogs and cats. Realistically speaking, the real solution is to work for legislation controlling this senseless practice. The solution is to increase our spay and neuter coupons and intelligently fight for laws limiting future breeding. We will not solve the problem with larger pounds and shelters that can only serve to warehouse more animals. People who think this will end the senseless killing of animals are living in a very happy fantasy land. Unfortunately, those ideas are economically unfeasible and will do nothing to decrease the overwhelming pet population.
It takes courage to stand up for what you know is true but I truly love animals so much that I want to do what is right for them. Thank you.
Birthplace: Canton Ohio
Education: Glenwood High School
Certified National Cruelty School 2003
Certified Euthanasia 1995
Personal: Married to Andrew J. Kopka III in 1959. Have two children Kim and Andy. I was widowed in 1986. I first became involved with the Humane Society in 1986 working at their fund-raisers. I took in cats and dogs, temporarily sheltering them, at my own home. I also volunteered at the dog pound on some weekends with Cassius Nation, my companion. I helped take care of his two children, Clay and Arline and still am taking care of Clay, his son, after losing Cassius in 2003 to cancer. My house is a home to 14 dogs and 11 cats. I have loved animals all my life.
Experience: Worked with Dr.Center and Dr.Classon. Ruth Lane and other concerned people wanted to help unwanted cats in Tusc. County so in turn was involved with the beginning of Cats N Us. The shelter opened In Uhrichsville, in June of 1993. I became the manager and remained so for the next 5 years. I also served as president of Cats N Us in 1994-95. I left Cats N Us in 2000 having concerns about the humane treatment of all animals. I had been approached by the Humane Society and asked if I would be interested in becoming the new humane officer. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided to accept the offer. I have had a lot of experience in dealing with people and animals and worked the job for three and a half years.
Vision: Go where you are needed. If you think you can't you will not grow. Think big, I have always had big hopes and dreams for the future.
