Refreshments will be served by the Tuscarawas County Republican Women and the Tuscarawas County Council of Democratic Women. Edward L. Gilbert has practiced law for over 20 years in Akron, Ohio. He has handled some of the most difficult and controversial civil rights cases of our era. He is a named partner in the firm of Slater, Zurz & Gilbert. In Hubbard v. Canton City School Bd. of Edn., 97 Ohio St.3d 451, 2002-Ohio-6718, Mr. Gilbert successfully argued to the Ohio Supreme Court that School Boards are liable if they neglect to supervise their staff to prevent sexual abuse of students. In Irvine v. Akron Beacon Journal, 147 Ohio App.3d 428, 2002-Ohio-2204, he won a jury verdict against the newspaper for telephone harassment and invasion of privacy. In Vandiver v. Morgan Adhesive Co. (1998), 126 Ohio App.3d 634, Mr. Gilbert prevailed in the right of his client to persue a claim of ethnic intimidation. In Stow v. Coville (1994), 96 Ohio App.3d 70, Mr. Gilbert obtained a jury verdict for $75,000 in compensatory damages for defamation claim and malicious prosecution. He won an additional $32,000 in punitive damages. The judgments were, however, reversed on appeal. Mr. Gilbert has more recently been involved in the litigation involving Providence Baptist Church. He received his B.S. from the College of Wooster and his J.D. from Akron University Law School.
